Analysing the data of apps, a technological challenge.

Although apps are not a novelty, we continue being fascinated by them not only for their utility but also for the way that the science and technology helped to bring them here. Apps use the mobile device’s own sensors to provide greater benefits to the user. These sensors, which are based on centuries of research, are now available to us only with a “touch”. GPS, video, accelerometer, temperature sensors, pressure and proximity, among others, are joined to provide the user experience. Simplicity is built on the complexity and knowledge. And this is just the beginning.

Mobile devices are with us 24 hours a day with their sensors and their apps, producing large amounts of data (Big Data), uninterrupted. Mobile and personal apps and data are a great opportunity for understanding the users’ habits, tastes and preferences. For this it is necessary to extract the information from the data. Here begins a new challenge: Building useful information structures from Big Data to the users’ knowledge for a more precise and personalized product and service.

To illustrate this challenge imagine a Barcelona app, which is used by tourists when traveling to the Las_appsDibujocity. This GPS app is crucial to knowing where the tourists are at all times, and so suggests sites and recommends activities. Additionally, the camera and other sensors are in constant use, some more often than others.

Suppose further that for 1 week of summer, 10,000 tourists are using the app at the same time. Every 15 minutes, every app generates a geo-location event. This means that in one week, the Barcelona app generates more than 6 million single events geo-locations! Is where powerful analytics Big Data in real time is needed.

Once these data analytics are recognized, the app could suggest an itinerary to every tourist in the city, using push notifications, keeping in mind their budget and tastes. And why not, suggest itineraries taking into account the behaviour of other people like them. The result of the analysis could allow the user experience to be unique, offering accurate information, at the right time, in the right place.

Closing the cycle and being able to maximize the user experience is also required technology. The analytics of large volumes of data (Big Data Analytics) is the only means of providing quality products and services based on information extracted from the data.
